Responsibilities of the Academic Representative include providing an expert view, particularly from an academic perspective, to enable the Chair to respond to all enquiries, consultations and correspondence from College Officers, Fellows and Members, and outside bodies, as and when they arise

- To identify educational tools required for the purposes of the RCOG CPD programme
The Professional Development Committee is responsible for ensuring that the RCOG CPD Programme remains within national standards, including those of the GMC and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, reviewing and modifying the programme and identifying educational tools required for the purposes of the programme and meets three times a year (one in person and two remotely).
This appointment is for a three-year term beginning in June 2025 and will be appointed by CV and Application form.

Academic Representative, Professional Development Committee

Three years
The role is part of the RCOG Professional Development Committee. The Terms of Reference of the Committee are available on the PDC web page on the RCOG website. The role of the Committee is to oversee the management of the RCOG CPD programme for UK and overseas Fellows, Members and Associates.
The role is to be a member of the RCOG Professional Development Committee.
- Attend PDC meetings three times a year
- Provide an expert view to enable the Chair to respond to all enquiries, consultations and correspondence from College Officers, Fellows, Members and outside bodies, as and when they arise
- Represent the committee at external events or meetings on behalf of the chair if and when required
- Members of the Professional Development Committee
- Vice President, Education
- Head of Education Innovation
- Director, Education
- CPD administration team and members of the Education Innovation, and Specialty Education and Training Teams
The Committee meets three times per year. There will also be a commitment outside of the meetings to deal with Committee matters and responses to consultations as required.
Regular attendance is expected at board meetings (in the event two or more consecutive meetings are missed, the board member will be replaced).
Person specification
Essential
- FRCOG/MRCOG
- Registered with a licence to practise with GMC, in good standing
- Specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology with a substantive academic appointment
- Evidence of annual appraisal
- Evidence of equal opportunities and diversity training within previous three years
- At least one fully completed CPD cycle
Desirable
- Formal training or experience in healthcare management and/or education
Essential
- Current or previous academic appointment in UK
Desirable
- Current or previous role as clinical and/or academic leader such as departmental lead/clinical director
- Experience as an appraiser
- Experience of developing educational tools to promote learning
- Clear demonstration of a commitment to improving women’s health relevant to the Professional Development Committee
- Good communicator
- Agreement from host organisation to be released to fulfil roles
- Flexibility of working between NHS, academic and RCOG roles
- Prepared to respond rapidly to issues as they arise
- Prepared to undertake work for the Committee, outside of the committee meetings
- Prepared to represent the PD Committee views for formal consultations
- Prior experience of a significant leadership role
- Detailed knowledge of current NHS, academic medicine and the Health and Social Care Act
- Up to date with membership subscriptions
- Of good standing with the College

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers
If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.
Reflection is required to claim credits for an Experiential Learning Event. 2 CPD credits are claimable following reflection. In addition 1 or 2 credits are claimable for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

- Supported by the eLearning team, to be responsible for the quality assurance process for online CPD resources on RCOG eLearning
- To support appraisal through relevant CPD
- Supported by its Equality and Diversity Champion, the Committee will ensure that equality, diversity and inclusivity are at the heart of the CPD Programme
- Continue to strengthen the voice of women and people who access obstetrics and gynaecology services in CPD to ensure the best possible person-centred care
