The responsibilities of the Course Faculty, MRCOG Part 1 Revision Courses include working with the Course Convenors to deliver Part 1 revision courses, identification of areas of improvement, SBA question writing and review, and chairing and/or speaking as part of the course to ensure high-quality educational content

This appointment is for a one-year term beginning in January 2025 and will be appointed by interview.

Fellows, Members and Trainees (having passed MRCOG Part 1 exam) are eligible to apply for this position.

Role description

Course Faculty, MRCOG Part 1 Revision Courses

Course Convenors, MRCOG Part 1 Revision Courses

One year, starting January 2025, to be reviewed and extended following this term based on performance and commitment to role

  • Act as course faculty for at least one of the Part 1 online courses per year. This will be a minimum commitment of one day a year and course dates will be provided at least 8 weeks in advance. This activity it intended to enhance question writing experience as faculty need to be able to actively explain answers to candidates on the course.
  • Attend at least one in-person question writing day a year which will be held within the College. The dates will be provided at least eight weeks in advance.
  • Reviewing previously written question, providing a recommendation of whether they should be removed or updated. Updating as necessary.
  • Produce new questions in advance of the question writing day. Annually, question-writing performance will be reviewed by the Convenors, should there be concerns about the number of questions submitted/the quality of the questions the question writer may be removed at the Convenor’s discretion. 

Course content:

  • Develop the current programme of MRCOG Part 1 Revision Courses organised and delivered by the College
  • Review and develop new courses and content where needed
  • Ensure that the course content reflects the MRCOG Part 1 exam and course content is updated in line with any changes made by the MRCOG Part 1 Exam Committees
  • Assess and approve of the course programme before speakers are invited
  • Ensure that appropriate senior supervision/representation is available on all course days
  • Ensure that course materials are available in ample time before the course
  • Lead the development and training of the faculty pool for the courses
  • Create and maintain a bank of relevant questions to be used on the courses
  • Organise question writing activities and review where necessary
  • Supported by the RCOG Learning team, and in conjunction with the Deputy Convenor, assist in updating and quality assurance of the RCOG eLearning resources
  • Quality assure all courses through delegate and faculty feedback and use the feedback to improve future courses
  • Quality assure the Part 1 eLearning modules

Organising the MRCOG Part 1 courses requires input from the Convenor and Deputy Convenor. It is essential that the post holder is enthusiastic, willing and able to commit the time to oversee all the courses. We currently run two virtual courses in May/June and December.

Course preparation time, teaching on the courses, course development and liaison with the exam committee all need to be factored into the amount of work. The work tends to peak in the months before the courses.

Additional meetings with the Events Team and Course Convenors may be required.

This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. 
The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term. 

Person specification

Essential

  • Passed MRCOG Part 1 exam 
  • Registered with a licence to practice with GMC, or Irish Medical Council, in good standing
  • Currently practising in the UK or within three years of retirement
  • Knowledge of the RCOG curricula and MRCOG syllabus
  • Generalist with a special interest, or specialist with broad-based generalist background
  • Evidence of equal opportunities and diversity training within previous three years

 

Desirable:

 

  • Active or previous participation in assessment and writing of relevant types of examination questions
  • Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, specialist training, educational supervision and assessment roles
  • Evidence of active interest in medical education 

Essential 

  • Experience of developing courses
  • Experience as an MRCOG examiner
  • Experience in writing examination questions for either undergraduate or postgraduate medical examinations 
  • Experience as examiner in undergraduate or other postgraduate examinations

Desirable

  • Previous membership of Part 1 committee 
  • Evidence of active involvement in medical education 
  • College Tutor or Educational Supervisor experience
  • Experience in standard setting for examinations
  • Understanding of the educational objectives governing the MRCOG Part 1 examination
  • Ability to provide constructive and helpful feedback
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and security
  • Punctuality and ability to complete tasks by prescribed deadlines
  • Reliable and committed
  • Good time management 
  • Enthusiasm and experience of working with trainees

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

Reflection is required to claim credits for an Experiential Learning Event. 2 CPD credits are claimable following reflection. In addition 1 or 2 credits are claimable for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.
