  • Chair of the MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment Sub-committee
  • Chair of the Examination and Assessment Committee, RCOG
  • Education Board, RCOG
  • President and Council, RCOG

Three years, commencing May 2025

The purpose of this committee is to set the questions and to provide all the relevant question material for the MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment. The MRCOG Part 3 examination includes lay representatives assessing the domains of communication, patient safety and information gathering in the MRCOG Part 3 examination. Therefore, lay representative involvement in this committee will perform a crucial role in contributing to the development of MRCOG Part 3 tasks and the training and preparation of lay representatives. The appointed lay representatives will work alongside the clinical members of the committee.

MRCOG Part 3 Sub-Committee lay representatives will be expected to:

  1. Attend all committee meetings and following task writing training contribute to the development of lay examiner mark sheets.
  2. If the Sub-Committee member is unable to carry on actively contributing to the work of the Committee, they should communicate this with the Chair. If the member is unable to carry on being involved in this work, they may be unable to continue as a member of the sub-Committee, at the Chair’s discretion.
  3. Support the committee to enhance the lay perspective in tasks and produce lay mark sheets for tasks.
  4. Review the performance of the questions following the examinations.
  5. Edit questions in committee or review other members’ questions prior to meetings.
  6. Be involved in the training of new clinical and lay representatives to ensure the role of the lay representative is fully understood.
  7. Contribute to preparing appropriate briefings that circuit coordinators provide to lay representatives about the tasks.
  8. Be a point of contact during the exams for lay representative support and feedback.
  9. With the support of the Patient & Public Involvement team and the Women’s Network representative on the Examinations and Assessment Committee, collate feedback from lay representatives after each diet and bring this to the sub-committee.
  10. Liaise with the Women’s Network representative on the Examinations and Assessment Committee in between meetings as needed to keep the Women’s Network informed of progress and developments.

There will be around four committee meetings a year, of which lay representatives will attend at least three. Lay representatives will also be available to assist with MRCOG examinations each year at the London or remote centres. A minimum of two days per examination is requested.

This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.

The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term.

Membership will be allocated by geographical location and special interest in order to maintain an appropriate balance for the Committee. The principles of Equality and Diversity best practice apply to all College Committee appointments.

CPD information

Information about the RCOG CPD Framework can be found here.

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.

Further information can be found in the RCOG CPD Framework document.
