MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Examiners (UK & International)

We are recruiting clinical examiners to support the delivery of the MRCOG Part 3 exam in the UK and at our global centres. This involves assessing candidates’ ability to apply core clinical and communication skills in the context of the knowledge, attitudes and competencies defined in the curriculum.

All applicants must have been a Member (MRCOG) for five consecutive years prior to application to be eligible for this role.

Role description

MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Examiner

MRCOG Part 3 clinical examiners are required to:

  • Attend the examiner training at least once every five years
    Support the MRCOG revision course for one day prior to examining for the first time
  • Indicate availability to examine in the MRCOG Part 3 exam at least once every year
  • Attend the examiner briefing session prior to each examination (usually in the morning of the examination)
  • Examine in the MRCOG Part 3 exam
  • Maintain confidentiality of the examination

Successful applicants are required to attend a training session, dates of which will be available on the RCOG website.

The MRCOG Part 3 examination is delivered across multiple international locations to ensure global accessibility. The current active exam centres are:

  • United Kingdom: London
  • India: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai
  • Southeast Asia: Malaysia, Singapore
  • Middle East: Cairo, Abu Dhabi
  • East Asia: Hong Kong
  • South Asia: Lahore

Please note that centre locations are subject to review and may change based on demand and availability.

Travel and accommodation, where required, will be organised and paid for by the College according to the RCOG travel policy.

Person specification

  • Member (MRCOG) or Fellow (FRCOG) of the RCOG and be up-to-date with membership fees
  • Must have been a member (MRCOG) for five consecutive years (UK & International) prior to application
  • Registered with a license to practice with GMC (UK) or Irish Medical Council (ROI) or equivalent registration status in country of residence (international)
  • Substantive consultant in obstetrics and/or gynaecology in UK NHS practice
  • SAS doctor in a substantive UK post in obstetrics & gynaecology with five years’ experience and independent specialist practice role in their job plan
  • For international applicants, a specialist currently practising obstetrics and/or gynaecology in an independent specialist practice role that is five years post MRCOG
  • Evidence of annual appraisal – if not available in country, please create an RCOG Learning account (if required) and complete the eLearning resource on appraisals here
  • Ability to make fair, unbiased judgements in the examination setting
  • Current equal opportunities and diversity training certificate (within the last three years) – if not available in country, please complete the free eLearning resource on improving workplace behaviour 
  • Absolute commitment to maintaining security and integrity of all RCOG exam questions and related content
  • Experience as an examiner in undergraduate or other postgraduate examinations
  • Active and current involvement/interest in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education
  • Agreement to train and examine for the RCOG supported by clinical or medical director/head of department

Essential criteria for retired obstetrics and/or gynaecology consultants:

  • Member (MRCOG) or Fellow (FRCOG) of the RCOG and  up-to-date with membership fees
  • Retired consultant in obstetrics and/or gynaecology and has stopped clinical work, up to three years post retirement  
  • Ability to make fair, unbiased judgements in the examination setting
  • Current equal opportunities and diversity training certificate (within the last three years)
  • Experience as an examiner in undergraduate or other postgraduate examinations
  • Experience in writing examination questions for either undergraduate or postgraduate medical examinations
  • Evidence of active involvement in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education (e.g. faculty of medical school or university, member of Specialty Training Committee (STC) or school O&G board locally, foundation programme director, unit training director)
  • College tutor or educational supervisor experience
  • Experience in standard setting for examinations
  • Membership of undergraduate examination board

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.
