MRCOG exam overview

The MRCOG qualification is made up of three parts.

Successful completion of all three stages is required for membership of the College (MRCOG) to be awarded.

1. MRCOG Part 1

The MRCOG Part 1 covers the basic and applied sciences relevant to the clinical practice of O&G.

The MRCOG Part 1 consists of a computer-based test (CBT) examination.

UK trainee doctors in O&G must pass the MRCOG Part 1 as part of their basic training, before they are permitted to start intermediate training, where they have increased clinical responsibility.

Here's what you need to do to book an MRCOG Part 1 exam:

  • Eligibility form: new candidates must submit an eligibility form
  • Expression of interest (EOI): all candidates wanting to sit a MRCOG Part 1 exam must complete an Expression of interest form

2. MRCOG Part 2

The MRCOG Part 2 exam assesses the application of your knowledge in clinical scenarios.

The MRCOG Part 2 is a computer-based testing (CBT) examination.

UK trainee doctors must pass the MRCOG Part 2 as part of their intermediate training, before they are permitted to start advanced training.

Here's what you need to do to book an MRCOG Part 2 exam:

  • Eligibility: candidates must have passed the MRCOG Part 1 before taking the MRCOG Part 2
  • Expression of interest (EOI): all candidates wanting to sit a MRCOG Part 2 exam must complete an Expression of interest form

3. MRCOG Part 3

The MRCOG Part 3 is a clinical assessment of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies.

Passing the MRCOG Part 3 exam leads to the award of the membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG).

UK trainee doctors must pass the MRCOG Part 3 to progress from core training to higher training (ST6 and ST7).

Here's what you need to do to book an MRCOG Part 3 exam:

  • Assessment of training (AoT): before applying for the MRCOG Part 3 exam, candidates must have had their training assessed and approved to confirm their eligibility to register. Candidates can apply to have their training assessed any time after passing the MRCOG Part 1 exam.

  • Confidentiality agreement: candidates are required to complete a confidentiality agreement before sitting their MRCOG Part 3 exam.
