This section of the site provides information and resources designed to support academic training in obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) at undergraduate level.
The RCOG, through the Academic Board, is fully committed to the concept that undergraduate O&G is:
- A fundamental part of the undergraduate experience
- A key element in educating trainees in basic clinical skills in O&G
- An opportunity to expose undergraduates to the option of O&G as a career
This section of the site brings together the ways in which the RCOG supports and develops undergraduate academic work in O&G.
Undergraduate work in the Academic Board
The Academic Board’s role in the development of undergraduate academic work in O&G includes:
- Supporting and developing those involved in planning and delivering undergraduate programmes in O&G at UK medical schools
- Supporting and encouraging undergraduate students wanting to develop an interest in O&G, particularly academic aspects of the specialty, in the future
The Academic Board also collates a range of useful information for undergraduates interested in academic O&G.
If you want to get involved in academic research as an undergraduate student, contact the Secretary to the Academic Board who will discuss your idea further and put you in touch with the relevant people.
BUSOG
The British Undergraduate Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (BUSOG) is also a good place to start networking with other people who have an academic interest.
Message from the President of BUSOG
“Academic work is an essential and enriching part of a medical career. The British Undergraduate Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (The BUSOG) provides opportunities to develop academic skills and facilitates engagement with research projects. This helps fulfils our wider goal to cultivate enthusiasm for O&G in medical students and pre-specialty doctors, and provide opportunities aiding a career in the specialty.
The BUSOG committees have produced several posters which have been showcased at conferences including the RCOG National Trainees Conference and the RCOG Annual Academic Meetings. Our committees have also chaired sessions at the RCOG Medical Student’s Day.
Our Mentorship Scheme has paired over 220 pre-specialty doctors with O&G doctor mentors, with many partaking in research projects as a result.
The BUSOG has also hosted a Research Skills for Obstetrics and Gynaecology Crash Course. This was a week-long interactive course which introduced undergraduates to research skills in a practical, interactive manner with a focus on women’s health.
Other academic activities include submitting our recommendations and a survey of our members to the UK government’s Call for Evidence on Women’s Health Strategy.
