How to apply for subspecialty training – Curriculum 2024

This section covers application, eligibility, and registration with the RCOG for trainees beginning their subspecialty training under Curriculum 2024 in August 2024.

Applying for subspecialty training

Subspecialty training programmes are usually advertised in the BMJ.

If you wish to apply for subspecialty training, you will need to apply directly to the Deaneries/Trusts as set out in the adverts.

The RCOG does not organise subspecialty training posts or programmes.

Eligibility for subspecialty training

To be eligible to enter subspecialty training, you need to fulfil one of the following criteria:

  • Hold a UK NTN (national training number) or equivalent, including successful completion of clinical training to ST4 or ST5 level, confirmed by outcome one in most recent ARCP or equivalent.
  • Hold a UK CCT or Portfolio Pathway and be on the UK Specialist Register in O&G, or hold a CCT or Portfolio Pathway that in due course will entitle you to enter the Specialist Register (formal entry to the programme will only be confirmed once you have formally entered the Specialist Register).
  • EEA (European Economic Area) and non-UK applicants who are listed on the UK Specialist Register in O&G.

For a detailed list of essential and desirable criteria required for entry into all subspecialty posts, see the Subspecialty Person Specification.

Work permit and visa requirements

Non-UK/non-EEA nationals with limited leave to remain in the UK who require a work permit are subject to the resident labour market test and may only be considered for appointment if there are no other suitable candidates who fulfil the eligibility requirements above.

Individual Deaneries will decide what evidence you will need to present to confirm your immigration status. For more information, please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

Appointment process

Appointment is through open competition involving a structured interview process.
