Queen Elizabeth II, 1926–2022

8 Sept 2022

We are deeply saddened to hear the news that Her Majesty The Queen died yesterday.

As a Royal College we remember with fondness the Queen opening our College in Regent’s Park in 1960 and hold that moment with pride. The Queen dedicated her life to public service, working right to the very end and will remain a source of inspiration to so many of us. We join with the rest of the UK in passing on our sincere condolences to the Royal Family at this time.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ history has involved a long standing relationship with the Royal Family. The College was granted a ‘Royal’ title in 1938 and the Royal Charter was awarded on 21 March 1947. That year, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, became Patron of the College and was also awarded an Honorary Fellowship. Her Majesty The Queen later opened the RCOG’s former home in Regent’s Park in 1960 and we are proud to house a detailed work of art by Terence Cuneo marking this moment. In 2018, the College welcomed Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge as its new Patron.

The President of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Dr Edward Morris said:

“This is a sad day for our nation, the Commonwealth and for Trainees, Fellows, Members and Officers of the RCOG. The Queen dedicated her life to public service, working right to the very end and will remain a source of inspiration to so many of us. Our College is deeply honoured that the Queen opened our building in Regent’s Park and we are grateful for the patronage of the Royal Family over the years who have done so much to support our work.”

Baroness Tessa Blackstone, Chair of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said:

“Everyone at the RCOG, including its staff and members are saddened by the news that Her Majesty The Queen has died. The Royal Family has a long history of supporting our College and women’s health issues. Our thoughts are with her family, especially our patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate Lancaster, CEO of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said:

“I am immensely saddened by the news. On behalf of the RCOG, I would like to express our sincere sympathies and join the rest of the country in offering our condolences to the Royal Family. Her Majesty The Queen’s contribution to the nation has been remarkable, and her many accomplishments throughout her reign will be greatly remembered by all.”

We join with the rest of the United Kingdom in passing on our sincere condolences to the Royal Family at this time.
